Fresh off Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb’s Project Labor Agreement Executive Order, the need is even greater for Roofers and Waterproofers Local 44 to recruit more apprentices.
To help introduce men and women in Northeast Ohio to careers in the union construction industry, the Cleveland Building and Trades will host a career fair on Oct. 16, at the Pipefitters Local 120 Hall, located at 6305 Halle Dr. in Cleveland from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Roofers and Waterproofers Local 44 will participate in the fair. Representatives will be on-hand to promote the trade and our Registered Apprenticeship Program.
The apprenticeship fair is a great opportunity for high school students, college students or anyone thinking about beginning a new career to learn about registered apprenticeship programs and how they lead to successful careers.
Building trades registered apprenticeship programs provide an excellent alternative to college, as they offer men and women a direct path to live a middle-class lifestyle by letting them earn while they learn.
Individuals who enjoy new daily challenges and like to work with their hands are good apprenticeship candidates – especially those who desire to work outside.
Through the earn while you learn model used by registered apprenticeship programs, apprentices receive classroom instruction and hands-on, on-the-job training with journeymen. During this time, they earn good wages, excellent healthcare and retirement benefits, plus scheduled raises as they improve their skillsets.
Most first-year journeymen earn a higher hourly rate than first-year college graduates and are not burdened with student loan debt.
For those looking to enter into a building trades registered apprenticeship program, this is a great time as there is a need in most trades for apprentices.
Besides helping replace the retiring Baby Boomer generation, a building boom in Greater Cleveland has amplified the need for highly trained and highly skilled workers.
Some of the marquee projects in the region include the Sherwin-Williams headquarters in downtown Cleveland, the Sherwin-Williams R & D Center in Brecksville, three Cleveland Clinic facilities on the main campus, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and Museum expansion, Cleveland Police Headquarters and Phase II renovation work on Progressive Field (following completion of the baseball season).
This is in addition to many medium and smaller-sized projects, plus forthcoming work thanks to Bibb’s PLA Executive Order. In September, Bibb signed an Executive Order mandating that all city-owned projects that cost at least $500,000 will be performed under a PLA.
Representatives from trades will be on hand to discuss how apprenticeships can lead to fulfilling careers as tradesmen and tradeswomen and other opportunities within the construction industry.
The event also provides attendees with the ability to learn more about the apprenticeship application process for each individual Local Union.
